Philosophy

Turtle eating soft coralDeep South dive center and Um Tondoba ecolodge has a clear philosophy of their place and purpose in the world. It wants to educate their guests in environmental awareness in order to keep the desert and Red Sea as beautiful as it is now. But is doesn't stop there: social responsibility is also a key part in this philosophy.

Diving guests are told why and how they can interact with the environment and especially how to behave under water. The result, for instance, is that turtles don't shy away from humans, but go on their easy own way. So other divers after you can enjoy watching turtles take a bite from the corals. It's their prerogative, not ours!
Another way in which it comes clear that this is an eco lodge is that the accommodation is build 745 m from the sea, so the sewerage doesn't kill the corals reefs and pollute the sea.
On occasion, guests are asked to help cleaning parts of the desert, as the big resorts feel no restrictions on dumping garbage in the desert.

The social responsibility is acted out in diverse projects to help the neighboring tribe, the Ababda. They are treated free of charge at the clinic Deep South has helped build. They are also, with help from Deep South, educated in reading and writing, the English language and environmental awareness with a special eye on eco-tourism.
